To prepare John Jay faculty for teaching online, the John Jay Department of Online Education and Support offers a 3-week, asynchronous workshop leading to certification to teach online at the College. “Effective Practices in Online Teaching,” is facilitated by faculty with firsthand knowledge of best practices in online teaching. The workshop is designed to prepare faculty for teaching online and/or hybrid classes, addressing design questions, pedagogical approaches to teaching online and hybrid courses, and strategies for organizing and facilitating an online class. It also provides an opportunity for faculty to become more familiar with the environment of the Blackboard LMS (Learning Management System). The workshop has been designed with a particular focus on the needs of John Jay students and faculty.
Through a combination of reading, viewing, writing, discussion, and hands-on practice, workshop participants explore the following topics:
-Understanding the Learning Environment
-Structuring the Online Course
-Interacting with Your Students Asynchronously and Synchronously
-Communicating and Instructor Presence
-Student Engagement
-Effective Assessments
-Facilitating Your Own Course
The workshop consists of one 3-week fully online session on Blackboard. Participants devote approximately 3-4 hours per week to this seminar.
Participants spend a TOTAL of 9-12 hours in asynchronous activities (3-4 hours per week) although the actual time spent may vary. As this is an asynchronous workshop, there are no required face-to-face or real-time online meetings required, although there are optional synchronous sessions. The workshop facilitators offer optional real-time meetings, if needed.
